Continually Monitor Who You Are and What You Do

Several years ago, updating your resume was often synonymous with mentally separating yourself from your current employer. Putting a copy “on the street” was the company-loyalty equivalent of putting a “For Lease” sign on your office door. However, in today’s business environment, the ability to articulate one’s current inventory of leadership skills and business acumen has never been more important or necessary. Business social networks such as LinkedIn remove the stigma of presenting an ongoing professional profile to the public. Don’t wait until you are looking to leave a company to take a hard look at what you bring to it. Taking stock of your skill sets starts when you decide to make purposeful change to refresh your career.

The savvy leader explores three foundational issues:

  • Where will the organization be in five years, and how can my capabilities help it get there?
  • What are the esteemed behaviors in the organization?  What are the values and cultural guideposts that point toward organizational fit?
  • How am I doing against these two perspectives? Are there any significant gaps?  What are the strengths to build upon?

You may find this self-assessment futile without external feedback. Reflect back for a moment: what strengths and weaknesses were highlighted in your most-recent performance feedback? Look around: Ask your trusted friends and colleagues to give you honest input on where they think you shine, and where you may fall short.

Then, leverage time-tested publications such as Lominger’s “For Your Improvement” to identify the Key Competencies of successful leaders, and behaviors that can stall or stop your career. It is impossible to know if you are on the right path without gauging your leadership skills and competencies against a clear, cohesive model for leadership success. Based on what you have learned about yourself, “For Your Improvement” can provide you with practical next action steps through clearly outlined diagnostic, self-development recommendations. Set the bar, develop, and execute a plan to reach it.

Whether you are looking for a new career, or striving for renewed focus in your current role, an examination of how to best leverage the unique portfolio of skills and business acumen that you possess is always a worthwhile investment. In a period where many managers find themselves lacking some key leadership skills, supporting the development and sharpening the skills deemed critical by an organization can often be the catalyst to excellence and success.

What are the key personal attributes and business competencies that you feel are needed to succeed as a leader today in your organization?
